CIA Assessment Warns Israel Faces Growing Risk of Internal Collapse
The assessment, titled “Fracture From Within,” was reportedly prepared in August by the CIA’s Red Cell, a unit responsible for challenging established intelligence assumptions and examining alternative scenarios.
The document reportedly highlights a combination of mounting pressures facing Israel ahead of its Oct. 27 election, including economic difficulties, increased military expenditures, disputes over compulsory military service and growing violence by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.
The assessment also identifies Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s efforts to maintain his political position as another factor contributing to heightened political and constitutional tensions within the country.
According to the assessment, years of military operations in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran have further exposed and intensified divisions within Israeli society. The prolonged conflicts have also placed significant pressure on military personnel, with reservists returning from extended deployments and many reportedly experiencing serious psychological effects.
One of the most significant internal disputes identified in the assessment concerns military service exemptions granted to ultra-Orthodox Jewish men.
The issue has become increasingly contentious as Israel has repeatedly called up reservists during its prolonged military campaigns. Opposition to the exemptions has reportedly grown among those who have been required to serve for extended periods, creating another major source of social and political friction.
The assessment further points to Israel’s changing international position as a potential contributor to domestic instability. It reportedly cites growing diplomatic isolation and declining levels of support in the United States as developments that could add to existing political and social pressures.
Taken together, the assessment describes a combination of internal divisions, economic strain, military burdens and external pressure that could intensify instability within Israel.
The concerns come as the country approaches another election while continuing to face the consequences of prolonged regional conflicts and unresolved disputes over military service, political leadership and relations with the international community.
