Trump Denies Discussing US Arms Sales With China
"I've never heard of that one," Trump told reporters when asked about remarks made by US Ambassador to China David Perdue. "We didn't discuss that. He may have been talking about Taiwan." Trump said Beijing could potentially be interested in US-made defense systems because he believes American equipment is superior, but insisted that no such proposal was discussed during his meeting with Xi.
Trump said China would "probably like to buy it because we do make better equipment," describing the idea as a “good idea.”
Perdue had said that Trump often tells foreign leaders that the US supplies defense equipment to countries around the world. He also claimed that Trump "at one point" asked Xi whether China would be interested in purchasing American weapons.
A US State Department official later said that US law bars defense sales to China and that Washington currently has neither plans nor proposals to provide military equipment to Beijing, according to reports.
