China Denies Forced Labor Claims, Slams US Tariff Plans

(MENAFN) China says there is “no forced labor” in its economy and criticizes proposed US tariffs targeting dozens of economies, according to reports.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning says, “We oppose making up pretext for laying tariffs; we oppose this as a pretext for political manipulation,” speaking in Beijing.

She adds that China “always opposes all sources of unilateral tariff measures of all kinds.”

“Trade and tariff wars serve no one's interest. Economic and trade issues should be resolved through dialogue on the basis of equality and reciprocity,” she says.

The comments come in response to a US proposal to impose additional tariffs of 10% or 12.5% on imports from at least 60 economies, including China and Hong Kong, over alleged forced labor concerns.

The US and China remain the world’s two largest economies, with GDPs of roughly $32 trillion and $20.8 trillion, respectively, according to reports.
