Japan Uses AI to Detect, Prevent Suicide Attempts in Public Spaces

(MENAFN) A new artificial intelligence-based monitoring system has been deployed at numerous train stations and commercial buildings across Japan, where it is being used to identify individuals who may be at risk of attempting suicide. According to reports, the technology has already helped avert at least two potential fatalities.

Created by a Tokyo-based technology company, the system examines live security camera footage and looks for behavioral patterns that may indicate a suicide risk. These include repeated pacing, remaining close to train platform edges for extended periods, or spending unusual amounts of time near rooftops, barriers and elevated railings.

When the software detects behavior considered concerning, it automatically alerts station staff and security teams. According to reports, some facilities also use public address systems to issue warnings or draw attention to the situation.

The company said one intervention occurred at a commercial facility after the system detected a man entering an area that was off-limits to the public. Security personnel responded to the alert and approached the individual, who later revealed that he had planned to end his life by jumping.

In another case, the technology flagged a child who had remained near a railing on an upper floor for a prolonged period. After receiving the notification, a security guard checked on the child and discovered that a suicide note had been written.

According to reports, the AI model was developed using a vast database of security footage collected through cooperation with approximately 200 commercial facilities and organizations.

Since 2022, around 7 million video samples have been used to train the system, helping it recognize behaviors that may signal a person is in distress.

The company says the initiative is intended to strengthen early intervention efforts by enabling staff to respond quickly when potentially dangerous situations arise, with the goal of preventing tragedies before they occur.
