UK Seeks Quick Resolution to Middle East Crisis, Cites Iran Threats
“We want to see the swiftest possible resolution of this crisis that brings security and stability back to the region, that stops Iran's threats to its neighbors and their efforts to hijack the global economy,” Yvette Cooper told parliament.
She highlighted that developments in the Middle East have global repercussions and reinforced the government’s stance: "As the Prime Minister said yesterday, we will not be drawn into a wider war. Nor will we outsource our foreign policy."
Updating lawmakers on British citizens in the region, Cooper noted that over 300,000 were present at the onset of the crisis, and approximately 100,000 have returned to the UK since the conflict began.
She added that British Typhoon and F-35 aircraft are actively flying across the Eastern Mediterranean, Jordan, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, and Iraq to provide defensive support, underlining the UK’s commitment to regional security.
"We want to see an end to this war as quickly as possible. The longer it goes on, the more dangerous the situation becomes," she reiterated.
Cooper further noted that Iran’s military capabilities have been "massively degraded," while stressing: “But this conflict has confirmed the threat the regime poses -- through its weapons and its proxies.”
