US, European Stocks Dip

(MENAFN) US equity markets ended Thursday lower as escalating Middle East unrest pushed oil prices higher due to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

The Nasdaq Composite slid 1.78%, or 404.15 points, landing at 22,311.98, while the S&P 500 decreased 1.52%, losing 103.18 points to 6,672.62.

The Volatility Index (VIX), commonly called the market’s “fear index,” surged 12.63% to reach 27.29.

European stock markets also experienced declines on Thursday, with the pan-European Stoxx Europe 600 index falling 0.61% to close at 598.86 points.

The FTSE 100 in the UK slipped 0.47% to 10,305.15, Italy’s FTSE MIB 30 retreated 0.71% to 44,456.18, and France’s CAC 40 edged down 0.71% to 7,984.44.

Germany’s DAX 40 eased 0.21% to 23,589.65, while Spain’s IBEX 35 recorded the steepest drop, falling 1.22%.

Investor confidence turned increasingly wary as energy markets endured sharp swings amid mounting geopolitical strains.
