China Calls for Restraint Amid US-Iran Nuclear Tensions
“China is closely following the relevant situation. We urge all sides to remain restrained. The escalation of the situation serves no one’s interests,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing.
Mao made the remarks in response to US President Donald Trump’s comments that he is considering a limited strike against Iran if the country does not negotiate a deal with Washington.
Reports indicate that delegations from Iran and the US will meet again in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday to continue discussions on a possible nuclear agreement, amid heightened regional tensions and fears of a potential conflict.
The upcoming talks coincide with an unprecedented US military buildup in the Persian Gulf and a series of recent drills conducted by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
President Trump has warned that military action could follow if a deal is not finalized within 10 to 15 days, as reported.
China’s call for restraint also comes after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated on Monday that Washington is “keeping all options open” in its approach to Iran while encouraging negotiations.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Colorado, Hegseth emphasized that Trump prefers diplomacy but noted that the US military has contingency plans ready if Iran refuses an agreement. When asked about the possibility of military strikes, Hegseth said: "Everything is on the table."
