Over Twenty Palestinians Dead as Cold Weather Lashes Gaza

(MENAFN) Fatalities from exposure to extreme winter conditions in the Gaza Strip have climbed to 24, with children comprising 21 of those deaths since October 2023, local officials announced Tuesday.

The government media office disclosed that seven minors have perished during the present winter period alone due to harsh cold exposure, pushing the cumulative toll to 24 as of Jan. 13, 2026, according to a released statement.

"All the victims were displaced Palestinians living in forced displacement camps," the statement said.

Authorities further documented approximately 7,000 tents destroyed by powerful storm systems currently hammering the region.

Officials issued warnings about "catastrophic humanitarian consequences" as plummeting temperatures grip Gaza while military operations and territorial restrictions continue, resulting in massive infrastructure devastation and displacing over 1.5 million Palestinians into camps with inadequate survival resources.

The vulnerability of at-risk populations—especially children—faces critical danger due to virtually nonexistent heating materials, insufficient protective housing, and acute deficits of blankets and cold-weather garments, officials stated, with humanitarian supply access remaining severely limited.

Israeli forces bear complete accountability for these casualties, which officials characterized as elements of a systematic approach involving "slow killing, starvation, and forced displacement."

The media office called upon global powers, the United Nations, and humanitarian organizations to implement emergency measures including establishing secure housing facilities, permitting unrestricted delivery of heating equipment and relief materials, and halting additional casualties.

Israeli military operations have resulted in more than 71,000 deaths—predominantly women and children—with over 171,000 additional injuries during the sustained campaign beginning in October 2023, leaving the territory devastated.

Even following a ceasefire implemented last Oct. 10, Israeli military actions have persisted, causing 447 Palestinian deaths and 1,246 injuries, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
