Global EV Sales Hit Record 20.7 Million Units

(MENAFN) Worldwide electric vehicle (EV) sales climbed to 20.7 million units last year, marking a 20% increase and setting a new record, according to London-based research company Benchmark.

China accounted for the largest share, with 12.9 million EVs sold, reflecting a 17% rise.

Europe followed with 4.3 million units, up 33%, while North America registered 1.8 million, down 4%. The remaining regions together sold 1.7 million vehicles, representing a 48% surge.

Globally, all 20.7 million units were sold in the passenger car and light-duty vehicle categories, the press release noted.

In Europe, the EV sector expanded by 33%, with Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) growing 31% and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) increasing 38% during the same period.

The statement highlighted that Europe’s EV market was shaped by regulatory adjustments, as EU tailpipe emissions standards were relaxed throughout the year.

Sales momentum accelerated in major European markets, with Germany rising 48% and the UK advancing 27% in 2025.

The release added: "2025 was a turbulent year for the North American EV market. In the US, the elimination of federal tax credits on 30 September 2025, alongside the reduction of CAFE standards fines to zero and the introduction of protectionist policies aimed at onshoring vehicle production and supply chains, significantly weakened market momentum.

"As a result, US EV sales grew by just 1% in 2025. Amid these changes, the Canadian market performed poorly following the removal of subsidies early in 2025, causing EV sales to fall by 41% over the year."
