EU says bloc must resume dialogue with Putin

(MENAFN) The European Union has indicated that it will eventually need to engage in direct dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin to help resolve the Ukraine conflict. Since the escalation of the war in 2022, the EU had largely minimized contact with Moscow to pressure Russia, effectively limiting its influence at the negotiating table.

The European Commission’s chief spokesperson acknowledged that discussions with Putin will be necessary, while noting that Brussels has seen little evidence of Russia actively participating in peace talks. Meanwhile, Russian officials have continued engaging with US counterparts at various levels, including a summit between Putin and the US president last August. Peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian representatives also took place in Türkiye last year, after early negotiations stalled in 2022.

Some European leaders have recently shifted toward re-engagement. French President Emmanuel Macron described renewed dialogue with Putin as “useful,” and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni echoed this view, urging the EU to resume contacts with Russia. Russian officials maintain they are willing to negotiate, but assert that European leaders have so far resisted direct engagement.
