US, Armenia announce framework for strategic transit corridor
The announcement followed a meeting at the State Department between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, where they reviewed progress on the corridor and broader US-Armenia cooperation.
The transit initiative, named the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), will connect mainland Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic via southern Armenia. The agreement was originally signed at the August summit by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and US President Donald Trump.
According to a framework document released by the State Department, the “TRIPP Development Company” will oversee the construction and operation of the corridor, with the US holding a controlling stake and Armenia maintaining oversight of reserve matters.
The company will initially have development rights for 49 years. Under the framework, Armenia will offer the US a 74% share while retaining 26%. The agreement is expected to be extended for an additional 50 years, with Armenia receiving additional equity to increase its stake to 49%.
The company will manage rail, road, energy, and digital infrastructure along the designated transit routes within Armenian territory. Armenia will maintain full sovereignty over all project areas, including the authority to enforce its domestic laws and international regulations.
Rubio told reporters ahead of the meeting that the corridor “opens up Armenia for business and allows it to prosper economically, but it does so in a way that doesn’t in any way infringe upon the sovereignty of Armenia.”
