Rubio says Trump seeks to buy Greenland, rules out military action

(MENAFN) The U.S. Secretary of State told lawmakers on Tuesday that President Donald Trump intends to purchase Greenland from Denmark and emphasized that there are no plans for an immediate military invasion.

During a private briefing, he downplayed concerns that U.S. statements about Greenland signal an imminent attack, stressing that the administration is pursuing negotiations with Copenhagen regarding the potential acquisition.

One U.S. senator said the approach “is all about negotiations,” adding that the United States requires “legal control and legal protections” before expanding its presence on the island.

Meanwhile, the White House stated that the Trump administration is exploring a “range of options” for acquiring Greenland and acknowledged that “utilizing the U.S. military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal,” highlighting the territory’s strategic significance for national security.

These remarks followed repeated proposals from Trump to gain control over Greenland for strategic purposes. After a U.S. military operation in Venezuela that captured President Nicolas Maduro, Trump reiterated that “We need Greenland, from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it.”

Greenland remains an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, and its leadership has consistently rejected any transfer of sovereignty or sale to the United States.

Denmark’s prime minister has publicly urged Washington to “stop the threats,” warning that any attempt to take Greenland by force would undermine longstanding alliances.
