Indian Lawmaker Urges Addressing Bangladesh Unrest
Indian MP Shashi Tharoor, who chairs a parliamentary committee on foreign relations, called for New Delhi’s involvement after a Hindu garment factory employee in Bangladesh was lynched and set ablaze by a crowd over alleged blasphemy against Islam.
“India cannot interfere in the domestic affairs of a neighboring country. But as a country which has contributed in many ways to the Bangladeshi nation and people, we can certainly exercise our diplomatic influence in Dhaka to persuade the (Mohammad Yunus) government to take constructive steps,” Tharoor told a media outlet on Sunday.
Violent demonstrations broke out in Bangladesh last week after the death of a leader from the 2024 uprising, who succumbed to gunshot wounds. Protesters flooded the streets demanding the detention of those responsible and carried out acts of vandalism.
Tharoor praised India’s management of its relationship with Bangladesh following the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5 last year. However, he also urged New Delhi “to support forces working to establish an inclusive democracy” in Dhaka.
