Attack on Plateau State Mining Site Claims Lives
The assailants struck late Tuesday at a mining area in the Barkin Ladi region, opening fire on the miners before fleeing the scene. During the raid, three people were also abducted. Local media indicated that the attack was allegedly carried out by armed Fulani militias.
Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, head of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), told a news agency that five more victims were hospitalized with gunshot injuries.
Authorities in Plateau State have reportedly confirmed the incident, stating that security forces have been dispatched to the site and that investigations are ongoing. The state has frequently experienced violence tied to criminal gangs and communal conflicts.
This incident marks the latest in a string of deadly attacks across Nigeria, where armed gangs and militant factions have escalated raids on rural communities, targeting churches and schools, particularly in the northwest and sections of the Middle Belt.
In response to rising insecurity, the federal government declared a nationwide security emergency late last month, deploying additional military and police forces and intensifying operations to curb mass kidnappings and assaults on educational and religious institutions.
The UN human rights office has reported that at least 402 individuals, mostly schoolchildren, have been kidnapped across four north-central states – Niger, Kebbi, Kwara, and Borno – since November 17.
