Japan Cancels Earthquake Advisory After 7.5 Magnitude Tremor
Authorities lifted the advisory shortly past midnight Monday, and citizens are no longer required to maintain evacuation readiness, media reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) had activated the unprecedented warning for the inaugural time, encompassing 182 municipal jurisdictions spanning seven prefectures from Hokkaido to Chiba, situated east of Tokyo, following detection of elevated seismic activity.
While no catastrophic megaquake materialized throughout the warning period, the agency documented 40 separate earthquakes registering intensity level 1 or greater through Monday afternoon.
Officials nonetheless emphasized the importance of sustained disaster-readiness protocols, urging citizens to maintain stockpiles of food, water, and critical emergency provisions.
The devastating tremor occurred off the coastline of Aomori Prefecture on December 8 at a depth of 54 kilometers, prompting tsunami alerts across portions of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures.
Government statistics indicate 46 individuals sustained injuries, while more than 9,000 residents were relocated as a preventative measure.
