China Strengthens Role in Global AI Race

(MENAFN) China is increasingly establishing its footprint in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, historically led by the United States, as Beijing regards the technology as crucial for its “national survival” amid a wider contest for international influence, according to a researcher.

Musab Ergani, a research assistant at the Turkish Diyanet Foundation’s Center for Islamic Studies (ISAM), told a news agency that the worldwide AI competition is mainly a contest between the US and China, with Europe lagging behind.

Ergani explained that China’s incentives are fundamentally distinct from those of Western nations. While the US considers AI a multitrillion-dollar instrument for technological and economic supremacy, China perceives it as essential for technological independence and national sovereignty.

“The prevailing opinion in China is to associate its ‘Century of Humiliation’ — a period spanning across 1839–1949 — with technological backwardness against Western imperialism, which is why, for China, AI is deemed as a tool to establish national sovereignty rather than a market share of commercial opportunity,” he stated.

According to Ergani, this mindset has allowed Beijing to marshal extensive resources, offer energy subsidies, and endure significant economic burdens to achieve technological self-reliance, driven by what he described as a survival-oriented national strategy.

He highlighted the introduction of DeepSeek R1, a Chinese large language model unveiled in January, as a pivotal milestone in the US–China AI rivalry. The model, he noted, showcased China’s capability to overcome hardware constraints through an “asymmetric” approach.
