Radioactive Contamination Detected in Indonesia’s Java Industrial Site

(MENAFN) Indonesian authorities have confirmed radioactive contamination at a major industrial site on the island of Java, according to local media reports.

Efforts are underway to decontaminate the site in Serang, Banten, with the operation being managed by officials and reported by a state-run news agency.

This contamination follows an August incident when Indonesia halted operations at a seafood company after the United States ordered a recall of its shrimp products due to radiation found in shipments.

The investigation began after cesium-137, a radioactive material, was detected in a batch of imported frozen shrimp from the company. Cesium-137, a man-made radioisotope produced by nuclear fission, is often linked to nuclear accidents and weapons testing.

Exposure to Cs-137 can cause a range of health issues, including nausea, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea, and skin damage. In extreme cases, it can lead to bleeding, infections, organ failure, or even death. Long-term, low-dose exposure raises the risk of cancer, weakens the immune system, and may cause birth defects in pregnant women.

The Environment and Forestry Ministry reported on Friday that a specialized task force had conducted an extensive decontamination effort by Thursday. The decontamination will continue until all radioactive traces are eliminated from the affected area.

Authorities removed highly radioactive materials using 20 drums, 17 jumbo bags, and three pallets, as part of the cleanup.

Health assessments of 1,562 individuals working or residing near the site revealed that nine people had been exposed to cesium-137. All nine individuals were hospitalized for treatment, though none are showing symptoms and their conditions are stable.

"They are being treated with Prussian blue medication," stated Aji Muhawarman, Head of Communication and Public Information at the Health Ministry.
