Israel Destroys Thousands of Homes in Al Zeitoun Neighborhood
(MENAFN) Over 1,500 houses in the Al Zeitoun area of Gaza City have been destroyed by Israeli forces since the beginning of a ground offensive earlier this month, according to the Palestinian Civil Defense.
Spokesperson Mahmoud Bassal stated that the entire southern portion of the neighborhood has been leveled, with no structures remaining intact.
This followed Israel's endorsement at the start of the month of a strategy to take control of Gaza.
The Israeli military has utilized heavy construction equipment and explosive-laden robotic devices in its operations.
Bassal reported that "seven sites" are detonated on a daily basis, and small drones, known as quadcopters, have been employed to release explosives directly onto the roofs of houses.
These tactics have drastically increased the extent of damage in the region, he added.
The ongoing destruction has led to a mass exodus of civilians, with Bassal estimating that "80%" of the local population has been displaced, fleeing toward the western and northern parts of Gaza City.
On August 8, Israel's Security Cabinet authorized a broader initiative to seize control of Gaza City.
This strategy entails pushing nearly "one million Palestinians" to the south, encircling the city, and conducting intensive assaults before establishing a full occupation.
Since October 2023, Israeli military actions have reportedly resulted in the deaths of nearly "63,000 Palestinians" in Gaza.
The offensive has left the area in ruins and teetering on the brink of famine.
In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, citing accusations of "war crimes and crimes against humanity" in Gaza.
