India, China praise “tranquility” at shared border

(MENAFN) India and China have lauded the "peace" and "tranquility" that have prevailed along their shared border as bilateral relations have improved over the past year, according to reports.

The remarks were exchanged at the start of the 24th round of border negotiations between the two nations. "There has been an upward trend," as stated by Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. "Borders have been quiet. There has been peace and tranquility."

Wang echoed these observations, commenting on the improved conditions along the 2,167-mile border. "We are heartened to see the stability we see," he said, adding that both countries "should increase mutual trust and properly settle the border issues."

Doval and Wang serve as the Special Representatives for the boundary negotiations. On Tuesday, Doval noted that bilateral interactions between the neighboring Asian powers have grown significantly over the past ten months. He credited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose discussions during the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, led to a breakthrough in strained relations. Tensions had persisted since a 2020 border clash in the Himalayas that resulted in casualties on both sides.

Following the Kazan meeting, the two countries agreed on disengagement from disputed areas and have since made progress toward normalizing ties. In July, China permitted Indian pilgrims to visit the Hindu holy sites of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar for the first time since 2020.
